Introducing a new series, Yoofi Clarke believes that "A proverb a day keeps folly away." In this first part, Yoofi explores how the book of Proverbs can help us grow in our walk with God.
Chapter 1 - THE FEAR OF THE LORD
The book of Proverbs is a thirty-one-chapter book that contains so much wisdom such that it is worth reading and meditating on a chapter daily. It is relevant for every era so let us meditate and pray that God will grant us divine wisdom to live right each day. May the Holy Spirit grant us wisdom for daily living as we study the book of Proverbs beginning with chapter one.
Verse 2 to 7 of the first chapter summarises the whole purpose and benefit of reading the book of Proverbs. Solomon wrote these proverbs to teach us how to live, how to act in every circumstance, for through him God wants us to gain understanding, and to be just and fair in everything we do. He wants to make the simpleminded wise, to warn young men about problems they will face, to make those wise to become wiser and become leaders by exploring the depths of meaning of these “nuggets of truth” (Living Bible paraphrase)
Ultimately, the bottom line is that wisdom is to fear the Lord (the awe and reverence of a loving Father that leads to an obedient heart, not a fear of punishment) because that begins the process of attaining knowledge (vs 7).
Let us pray for the fear of the Lord that gives wisdom because a time will come in our lives when we must apply wisdom to a particularly difficult situation and the consequences of not being able to apply His wisdom could be dire.
The Old revealed in the New
In 1 Cor 1:24, we read: "But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks (gentiles) Christ Jesus is the power of God and the wisdom of God."
Seeking Jesus and making him the centre of our lives will set us on the road to acquiring divine wisdom for He alone is the wisdom of God.
Do you need wisdom to make the right decisions and navigate through life's challenges? Then allow Jesus to be in the driving seat of your life and deepen your relationship with Him. Turn to Him daily in prayer, and let His will be done in your life-for He is your wisdom.
