Michelle Moran has received a prestigious papal award in recognition of her years of service as President of the International Charismatic Renewal Services at the Vatican.

Michelle received the Caritas in Veritate Award at the 2025 CIV Papal Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C. on 14 November. She served as President of International Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) in the Vatican from 2006 to 2017.

After receiving the award, Michelle told the CCR Website: "In honesty, the award was not to focus on me but on all the wonderful graces and blessings that we have all received through CCR."

"To God be the glory."

Michelle added: "It took me a while to agree to receive it, not because I do not think it's a prestigious award, but because I just think there are better people than me who could receive it tonight."

Michelle is a former member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, serving from 2008 to 2016. She is also well known as a preacher, teacher, and evangelist around the world, and is a popular speaker in parishes and conferences in the UK.

A key moment in Michelle's ministry came in 2016, when Pope Francis personally appointed her, along with Argentine Pino Scafuro and two secretaries, to form a team which would establish CHARIS, the unique International service of Communion for Catholic Charismatic Renewal. CHARIS was officially inaugurated by Pope Francis in 2019.

'Congratulations, Michelle, for spreading the grace of the New Pentecost'

CHARIS International paid tribute to the award, saying: "Known for her powerful ministry, Michelle and her husband Peter served as missionaries for over 40 years. Congratulations, Michelle, for spreading the grace of the New Pentecost and inspiring evangelization throughout the world."

Michelle has received other messages of congratulations for winning the award. CHARIS England and Wales said: "This is a well-deserved award for Michelle Moran. She has been a wonderful and faithful servant of CCR in England and Wales and beyond, faithfully proclaiming the joy of the Gospel around the world for many years. Having continued to say 'yes' to the Lord's call in her life, Michelle's words and life have impacted countless numbers of people in their walk with the Lord, and we are very grateful.

"In typically humble style, Michelle did not want the focus to be on her with this award, but on all the Lord is doing. We thank her for her contributions and are grateful to God for using her to build His Kingdom. Congratulations, Michelle, on a great achievement. We join you in saying: To God be the glory!"

Michelle receives award "with great humility and profound thanksgiving to the Lord"

Led by Archbishop of Boston Cardinal Sean O’ Malley, ‘Caritas in Veritate’ is a global confederation of Catholic institutions which is "dedicated to recruiting, forming, mobilizing and engaging young volunteers, to bring charity in truth, and human progress to all people." The 2025 Papal Award Ceremony took place at a Gala dinner in the Mayflower Hotel, Washington DC.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Michelle commented that she felt "overwhelmed" at attending "such an auspicious gathering." She said: "I received this award tonight with great humility and with profound thanksgiving to the Lord. And I also receive it in honour of all those who tirelessly serve the Lord, often in very hidden ways.

"I also want to thank those who inspired and supported me on my missionary journey and calling.

"I want to say above all: to God be the glory."

Looking to the future

Reflecting on the award, Michelle paid tribute to her "wonderful husband Peter," and highlighted that she has "entered into my 50th year of serving the Lord as a missionary" after "following a call to serve the Lord" at the age of 17.

"It has been a privilege over the years to be able to travel to so many different places together with my wonderful husband Peter, who's with me this evening," she said.

"I've been privileged to serve the Lord in many different missionary contexts, proclaiming the good news, witnessing to the joy of the gospel, getting my hands dirty on various projects, serving the poor."

Michelle is a board member of The Ark and the Dove Worldwide, the historic site of the "Duquesne Weekend", who said it "rejoices in sharing the blessed news that one of our board members has been selected to receive a papal honor."

The Ark and the Dove Worldwide added: "Congratulations, Michelle. You have carried the grace of the New Pentecost to countless hearts around the world. Thank you for your inspiring witness and for teaching us the true meaning of evangelization and sharing the faith."

Michelle is now keen to focus on further evangelisation efforts in the future, saying during the awards ceremony: "The passion that I have is to encourage and raise up the next generation of leaders in our church and in our society. And that's what I'm focusing upon."
